I have an unconventional love for music. Growing up, I always had my iPod in ear on every car ride, on the bus coming home from school, headphones in my ear when I was walking on my way to class up until now. My dad is my inspiration for my love of music. He would always be bumpin’ a variation of music genres growing up: Reggae, zouk, soca, R&B, soul, jazz & kompa.

Being of Caribbean descent... you already know our parents and how they generally enjoy life no matter what comes their way ;) ) oh- and their love of music and dancing. I grew up in a tech-savvy time, and I’m grateful for that because honestly, what is life without music? I wanted to write about an artist because I love showcasing their gifts and talents that they share with the world. I’m dedicating my next blog post to the one and only Popcaan AKA Andrae Sutherland. If you're unfamiliar of the unruly boss, what are you doing with your life? Lol jk. He’s a dancehall artist from St. Thomas, Jamaica but grew up in Portmore, near Kingston. If you haven’t heard of the music genre dancehall, it’s described to be a cool mix/combination of upbeat reggae. So who is Popcaan? He’s like the Drake of rap to sum it up… but the dancehall God of Jamaica. (Shout out to Vybz Kartel; can’t forget about this Legend that started it all). Big up Tommy Lee Sparta, Aidonia, Mavado, Alkaline, Sean Paul, Beenie Man + so many more dancehall legends. Big up ALL the new dancehall artists as well. From scrolling through Instagram and watching him...Popcaan seems to be a silly and wild guy; always out and about with his crew traveling, performing and grinding. He seems to have no filter, and I love it! But let’s keep it about the music. “Where We Come From” his debut album in 2014 was an instant hit. Each song has its own distinct feel. It is super vibzy. “Everything Nice” made you just want to drink some Hennessy & hang loose with friends & fam, while “Addicted” makes you just want to wine up with your besties at a beach party and have no worries in the world. Each track is hot, but I just wanted to give you a little overview. If the names still not ringing a bell, you may have heard his ad-libs on a few of Drake’s tracks. A snippet of his voice was in More Life (Madiba Riddim outro). His voiceover was also heard in If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (Know Yourself, No Tellin’, and Star67), as well as featured on the Controlla remix... ringing a bell yet? ;) He has a distinct accent, so you can’t miss it. You may have also seen him alongside with Drake & the OVO crew. I guess it’s a family ting? Lol #OVOUnruly.

Popcaan is an artist of Mixpak Records- the Brooklyn based record label founded by producer Dre Skull. They showcase a variation of artists from all different music genres so go check them out and discover what they have to offer. Who knows, you may be the next artist they sign :) Instagram: mixpak. Back to Poppy (a nickname that friends call Popcaan). I’ve been dying to know when the unruly boss is coming out with his next album... and the wait is finally over. It has been set in stone that his new album “Forever” will be out July 20, 2018. So far, he has already released three singles that will, in fact, be on the album: Wine For Me, Firm and Strong and Body So Good. I’ve listened to each song, and I’m beyond eager to hear the album (Go take a listen). Popcaan has come a very long way in the music industry. Things are not always easy and breezy in Jamaica. Positivity, his family + friends, and dedication seem to be what keeps the Jamaican artist going. He’s a hardworking musician as you can tell if you pree(meaning "watch" in patois) him on social media- and I’m so happy that he’s thriving in all aspects of his life. If you're going to be in JA the week of July 15th-22nd go see him live in concert at Sumfest Friday, July 20th. It's an annual concert in Montego Bay with different artists. I will put the link below to the website so you can purchase them.

P.S. I’m going to Jamaica in two days and I’m SO EXCITED because it’s been three years and ya girl needs a vacation! I hope you had fun hearing about an artist that you may/may not know. You learn something new every day.

Be back soon! Pics on my Insta will be up ASAP and more content is coming your way ;). What do you want me to talk about next? I'm eager to hear your thoughts!

Latah- in patois (Jamaican dialect) that means bye :) !!!

XO -Brit
