Hi everyone. I hope you’ve had a great day. What a blessing it is to be alive and well.
I’ve been thinking about what I want to talk with you guys about next. I thought, why not write about something fun, exciting and empowering since the last post was about melancholy news. Subject? A person, but who? For some reason, Issa Rae popped up in my head, so I thought, uhm… yes! She’s talented, influential and making moves left and right. So here we go/let’s dive in! Let’s take it back to 2011/2012. I started watching Awkward Black Girl when I was in 10th/11th grade. My past friend put me on, and I was completely addicted after the “I can’t dance” episode. I could completely relate.(If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend; Youtube). I just remember thinking who is this girl? She’s so cool for creating this concept into a 5-minute video. Seldom could you find a TV show let alone a YouTube series about a black girl who was awkward going through some crazy sh** back then. First off, in high school I was beyond awkward I was black, and on top of that, I couldn’t dance. (What a bad combo- minus being black… because BLACK GIRL MAGIC ;) ). I remember me and L at the time would just be in her room binge watching every season. (Like it was addicting at this point). When it ended, I was so sad. In a sense, her show and her character’s traits made me realize that maybe I’m not so weird and awkward after all. There are probably other girls that feel the same way. I thought, why not own my weird teenage self. So I did, the remaining years of high school.
Fast forward to Rae landing an HBO series. (She did that shit!!). I don’t know the process of what it took her to get her own show, but I applaud her and commend her for it. She gives me the motivation to go after my dreams everyday. She was just a normal girl doing what she loved- incorporating different storylines/concepts and made them into a scripted series. Now look at her-not only has she been landing deals with Covergirl, but she was also spotted alongside several women in Drake’s Nice For What video. (Bish, what)? Rae’s highly recognized now reaping the rewards of the hard work she put in years ago. She’s also quick to showcase other unknown creatives. How totally awesome is that? *Awkward Black Girl voice.* Super random comment, but I’m so excited for season 3 of Insecure. Is Lawrence going to come back? Did Molly really get back together with Dro? What’s Kelly’s crazy self going to get into this season? And what dumb remark is Tiffany going to make? Ah!! August 12th can’t come quick enough. Back to Issa. Issa Rae has clearly proved herself in the entertainment industry. I love her drive to empower black people and black success. I can’t wait to see what she gets into next. Haven’t heard of Issa Rae? Google her. Check out her website: www.issarae.com. Watch Awkward Black Girl and Insecure. I know I always say this in my post, but I wanted to end on a good note. Go after your dreams. Get up! Start over if you have to. Just go!
Hope you had fun hearing about the beautiful Issa Rae. I’ll be back soon. Take care.
XO- Brit
